Why was my proof of ownership document denied | What documents are accepted for a pet ownership transfer?
Why was my proof of ownership document denied?
The most common reasons for denial are:
- No owner name listed
- Document is not in the new owner's name — the name on the document must match the name on the account
- No pet information listed
- Document is out of date — vet bills, rabies certificates, and pet licenses must be dated within the last 12 months (adoption contracts and bills of sale are exempt)
- Document is not acceptable — handwritten documents are only accepted if notarized
- Document is too difficult to read — print is too light or too blurry
Common mix-ups to avoid: - An adoption application is not the same as a signed adoption agreement or contract - A photo of a rabies tag or license tag is not the same as a rabies certificate or pet license issued by your city or town
Documents we do not accept under any circumstances: AKC or CFA registrations, medical records or patient charts, reminder reports, emotional support or service animal certificates, receipts for licenses, grooming or boarding, rabies or license collar tags, or adoption applications.
If your transfer request was denied, you will receive an email explaining the reason and an opportunity to upload a new document for review.
