How do I transfer ownership of a pet to a new owner
How do I transfer ownership of a pet to a new owner?
There is a one-time fee of $29.99 to transfer ownership. The process depends on who initiates it.
If the current registered owner is initiating the transfer
- Log in to your PetLink account at https://www.petlink.net/account/member-login/
- Click on your pet's profile.
- Click Transfer Ownership.
- Enter the new owner's email address and click Submit.
- The new owner will receive an email asking them to confirm and pay the $29.99 transfer fee.
- Once payment is complete, you will receive a confirmation email.
If the new owner is initiating the transfer (e.g. adopted pet)
Go to https://www.petlink.net and click Transfer a Pet. The process has four steps:
- Validate the microchip number.
- Enter your information.
- Submit proof of ownership.
- Submit the $29.99 payment.
Accepted proof of ownership documents: - Adoption agreement from a rescue or shelter - Current pet license from your city or town - Current rabies certificate - Vet bills dated within the last 12 months
The name on your proof of ownership document must match the name on the account you are creating.
Not accepted: AKC or CFA registrations, medical records, reminder reports, emotional support or service animal certificates, grooming or boarding receipts, rabies or license collar tags, or adoption applications.
Important notes
- Transfers cannot be completed by phone — online, email, or mail only.
- If you prefer to submit by mail, contact us at petlink@petlink.net and we will send you a transfer of ownership form.
- In the unlikely event the previous owner contests the transfer, it will be reversed and the $29.99 fee refunded.
