I lost my pet. It was found. By Tulsa animal welfare. I was notified. What's the correct procedure the facility should follow

Tulsa Animal Welfare (TAW) should hold stray pets for at least three days (excluding holidays/closed days) to allow owners to reclaim them. They will check for microchips, notify owners if identified, and require you to pay impoundment, boarding, and licensing/vaccination fees to take your pet home.

**Once it comes to our attention that your pet has been located we will file a found pet report and contact you by email, text, and phone to assist with the reunification process.**

Correct Procedure & What to Expect:

  • Scanning and Notification: TAW scans for microchips immediately. If your pet has a tag or chip, they will attempt to contact you.
  • Holding Period: Stray animals are legally held for 3 days to allow owners time to claim them.
  • Reclaim Process:
    • Hours: The shelter is open daily from 2 – 6 p.m. (closed the second Wednesday of each month).
    • Location: 3031 North Erie Ave, Tulsa, OK 74115.
    • Fees: Be prepared to pay for impound fees, boarding fees, and potentially license/vaccination fees.
  • Location/Contact: Confirm by calling (918) 596-8000 or visiting their website.

What You Should Do:

  • Visit Promptly: Go in person to the shelter to confirm identification.
  • Bring Proof of Ownership: Bring photos of your pet, veterinary records, or adoption papers.
  • Check the Map: Use the City of Tulsa's lost pet map to verify your pet's listing.

If the pet has been there longer than three days, the shelter may initiate adoption or rescue transfer procedures, so contact them immediately.
