How can PetLink help if my pet is lost?
Your pet's microchip is not a GPS enabled device - a microchip is an unalterable form of identification that cannot be tampered with.
In the event your pet is lost and scanned, the scanner will only display your pet's unique microchip number (the scanner does not have the ability to respond with pet or owner info). Your registration in the PetLink database determines who this pet's owner on record is.
If your pet is wearing a collar tag the finder will know to contact directly, otherwise the finder may use the search engine available on AAHA's website. If you click here and enter your pet's registered microchip number AAHA will identify which database the microchip is registered with.
Once it comes to our attention that your pet has been located we will file a found pet report and contact you by email, text, and phone to assist with the reunification process.
Report & Review
- Please click here to login to your PetLink account and complete a Lost Pet Report (you may also choose to feature your Lost Pet Report in our online Lost Pet Gallery which is available for public viewing. Additionally, we allow you to share this Lost Pet Report on various social media platforms for extra exposure)
- Review your contact information and consider adding an additional contact
- Prepare and print PetLink Lost Pet Posters
- We recommend that you do not include mention of a monetary reward. Avoid using terms like "show dog or breeding dog" which may indicate monetary value
- If possible, have the posters laminated at a local office supply store before posting them outdoors so that they better withstand the weather
Recovery
- Mobilize a team of family, friends, and neighbors to canvas a two-mile radius of your home. It's important to do this as soon as possible after you realize your pet is missing
- Leave posters with local businesses, vets, animal shelters, community centers, parks, etc. Be sure to include UPS and FedEx drivers, police, crossing guards and other neighborhood regulars like walkers & joggers
- Contact local animal shelters, vets and animal control facilities to see if anyone has recovered your pet
After you file the lost pet report be sure to check your email, text, and voicemail frequently for any messages from PetLink.
